Thoughts on Color

Use the color wheel to limit your palette to fabrics that go well together:

Warm colors:
  Yellows, oranges and reds.

Cool colors:  Greens, blues and purples

Hues:
The purest form of a color.  What you usually think of when you think, “red” or “blue”

Tints:  Lighter versions.  Think “pastel” – lavender, peach, mint

Shades:  A color with black added.  (Think maroon, navy blue, forest green)

Tones:  Both black and white added.  The color is “greyed down.”  Think dusty rose.  Not sure about your charity, but our donations seem to have a lot of tone fabrics.  And they tend to go best with other tones.

Not sure what I'm talking about?  This link has good visuals:  Hues, tints, shades and tones

Try picking a section of the color wheel and using fabrics in those families:

This quilt is done in with fabrics in the blue-to-purple range of the color wheel.  Actually, you're a lot of my quilts are done with fabrics in this range.  What can I say, these colors were my mother's favorites, and I guess I take after her.  :-)

(I call this pattern "Stained Glass Lasagna," and it's VERY simple and perfect for charity quilts.  Directions are here.)
